Refurbishment of Higher Education Building (Block A)

This Design and Build project consisted of the internal alteration and complete refurbishment of an existing four storey 1950's teaching building to create a modern and well equipped teaching facility for Colchester Institute. The project was designed and built to provide greatly enhanced thermal performance together with extensive structural and aesthetic improvements in conjunction with the introduction of mechanical, electrical and I.T. services.

The existing building had the added problem of encapsulated asbestos to the soffit of each of the four concrete floors. Using innovative designs, we achieved refurbishment of the entire building with limited asbestos removal works to isolated areas only. This reduced removal costs significantly.

The building has undergone a major refurbishment throughout and included significant structural improvements, external concrete repair works, lift replacement and full re-roofing. The building is located between the main car park and reception areas which naturally dictated our site operations to require careful planning and regular liaison with the client to ensure minimum disruption.
